It’s All About Revisions

Everyone who writes needs to revise sooner or later. Well, actually—it would be better if he or she waited until the draft was at the end. I even tried finding out ways to rewrite the last draft of my novel as soon as I completed it. I kept getting stuck.

I read pretty much every relevant article and even asked for help on a certain forum online. Everybody who responded to the thread said that I should give myself more time.

And they were right. While I successfully made a list of ideas for my next draft, I couldn’t actually start writing the next draft until recently. So, no writer had exaggerated about that. You do need to give yourself some time away from your WIP. Many writing experts suggest at least a month or two—often times, even more. But I didn’t really have several months.

I was going to submit the WIP to a certain editor, but I had to have that delayed due to just starting a new draft.

All right, maybe that’s enough backstory. I probably revise like most writers, although I often rewrite my stories long before I finish them. I try not to now, but I did before, because I was constantly getting bored with my writing. I started my current project four years ago, but for the first two years, I couldn’t finish a single draft. I would get bored by the tenth or eleventh chapter and give up. It was not until January 2018, that I discovered my actual writing process. That was when I could write an entire draft without quitting before it ended.

Now here’s a fun fact: I sometimes revise individual paragraphs. How? I wait a little, copy and paste that certain paragraph to another word doc, rewrite it there, and then copy and paste it to the main document.

Revision processes differ from person to person. So, you might revise in a way that wouldn’t necessarily work for me.

The raindrops darkened into black, looking as if ink fell from the sky. Alyssa leaned closer to them. She squinted to determine the shapes they formed on the kitchen window… letters.

No! That couldn’t happen. Yet, a message spelled out as more pigments plopped onto the glass. Alyssa gasped at what it said.

Would she earn a break now? Ever since her uncle, Bruce, had hired Mrs. Hutchinson, Mrs. Hutchinson had admired the way Hailey had done her chores more than Alyssa.

“Hailey, you can take a break until your next chore,” said Mrs. Hutchinson. “Alyssa, get back to work. You’ve been staring at the rain for too long.”

“Okay.” Alyssa turned back—only to see the message gone and the rain back to its normal transparency.

“What did I say?” asked Mrs. Hutchinson.

Alyssa sighed. “Fine, I’ll finish washing the dishes.”

Chapter 7: “Threats come true?”

Sal’s mom continued to scream from the upstairs window. 

“Fire is hot and our drama don’t stop,” Smooth rapped. 

“Really Smooth? At a time like this?” Army scolded. 

“Army do something.” Sal pleaded: “There has got to be a way to save her. The flames are closing in fast. And the house could collapse at any second.”

Army took his grabbling rope and threw it into the window. Its hook caught onto something and Army began climbing the wall… 

Meanwhile Sal grabbed the water hose and sprayed the door.

“Smooth, here,” she said passing him the hose. “Give me a chance to get in there.” 

“Got you,” Smooth said.

He blasted the flames with the hose and Sal leaped into action running right into the house. 

She saw the stairs. They didn’t look like they could hold her weight, but she had to save her mom. If she didn’t - the threat would come true!

... Army almost reached the second floor climbed when a flame leaped out at him! In his haste, Army slipped off the rope, and fell right into the bushes below him.

Meanwhile Sal ran up the stairs thinking: “I’m going to make it!”

But she relaxed too much, for when she had almost reached the top, the stairs collapsed! She leaped in the air and somehow caught the edge of the floor. Her legs dangled above the flames as she pulled herself up. Sal crawled on the floor to her mom’s bedroom where she found her unconscious. Sal grabbed her mother.

“Mom!” Sal screamed as her adrenaline kicked in. Sal grabbed her mom’s arms and pulled her to the window. She knew that they had to make a jump for it, but what would she use to support the fall? She remembered the bushes outside her mother’s window. 

“Out of the way!” Sal shrieked at Army and Smooth. She clasped both arms around her mom’s stomach, closed her eyes, and jumped out of the window. Sal landed on the bushes on her back with her mom safely on top of her. Sal’s mom coughed as her daughter got up from the bushes. Sal took a long look at her mother.

“She’s ok,” Sal said aloud to herself.

“You’re bleeding,” Smooth said to Sal. 

“Yeah and now it’s Pierre turn. He crossed the line. I’m going get him.” Sal said, letting her anger take over.

“I hear the sirens,” Smooth told them. “Let’s wait for the fire department and the…

“You can wait,” Sal said as she walked towards her neighbor’s yard.

“Army,” she called. “Can you start this motorcycle?” 

Army pulled out a screwdriver.

“Step aside,” he said.

Sal backed up. In a few moments she heard the bike’s engine roar. 

“Do you know how to ride?” Smooth asked. 

Sal ignored him, hopped on the bike and took off. 

“Now YOU’RE welcome,” Army commented.

“Sal’s got a temper/ heart colder than December,” Smooth rapped.

But Army was serious with his reply: “I thought the adventure was almost over. But now…now all I see is… danger!

I am a family person and live and work part time (besides writing) in the Gold Coast Region of Queensland, Australia.

This is my first formal venture into the writing arena and I hope to gain an insight into the world of authors prior to releasing some self help and motivational books at a later date.

I have created the Amazing Australian Animals Series ®, which will comprise a total of 18 books in the series. I will be releasing two and sometimes three books per month this year until the series is completed.

The series is intended to be fun for both adults and children, while educating the young children at the same time about Australia and its amazing native animals.

My books are designed so they can be read by an adult (or a teacher, carer etc) to a younger child who can look at the many colorful photos and illustrations and havev fun and learn at the same time OR read by an older (but still young) school age child. Each book will be able to be used as a reference for school projects, research assignments etc by older children.

The first book in the Series is called “Kangaroo Facts - Easy Learning for Kids” and all books will have similar titles and a similar cover design for ease of identification.

I have also written non fiction work in other categories and for adults which will be released towards the end of 2014.

Free Chapter Books: Mystery, Bullying & Farts

Every once in a while I can find some chapter books for free on the Kindle that seem like they may be interesting. I usually have an aversion to vampires and werewolves and other science fiction, so that limits me a bit. Lately I have come across some freebies, though, that seem a little promising.

The Sinister Submarine (Brant Twins Mysteries)

The Brant twins are Jimmy and Sally, who are as different as they could be. They travel around the world with their mother, a marine biologist, and their father, an ecological specialist, and often find themselves in the middle of a mystery.

In this book, they come across a WWII submarine in the middle of the Bahamas. There is no logical explanation as to why it is there. They save a dolphin while working with the US Coast Guard to collect clues as to this mystery submarine.

As of this posting, the book has 10 five-star reviews, some of which even liken the book to the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series.

Okay, so at first glance, this one appears to be one of the "gross" titles, I know. But actually, this one is supposed to be about bullying. Mondays are bad enough for 4th grader Lance Chance. But when the class bully cuts the nastiest fart on record, he blames it all on Lance. Lance wishes that farts had colors, so that it could be truly tracked back to their source. And his wish comes true...

This book for children has been created in a similar fashion as the classic Wind in the Willows. A self-sustained community of animals has many adventures in the Irish countryside in the late 1800s. Illustrations in full color add to the theme of the Golden Rule. It is recommended for children ages 8-12, but younger children can also enjoy it being read aloud. At the end are a list of discussion questions for parents and teachers to use with the book.
