Review of Ethan's STEM Adventures: I Can Be a Scientist! by Louis J. Desforges

Like the infinite-shade of colors, the richness of life is enhanced by our natural inclination, as creative beings, to hold distinct perspectives on just about any subject. Collectively, however, I believe we all appreciate the profound significance of all the things that influenced and molded us from an early age—the moments and events that are weaved intricately into our memories.
Who amongst us cannot recall a story, no matter what artistic form used to bring it to life: a book, a show, a play, a comic, a song, a movie, or even a real-life character (that family member, teacher, coach, or friend) who shaped the lens with which we view the world then, now, and always.
For this very reason, I believe children should see themselves represented in all areas of human endeavors, cementing deep within their framework the possibilities that await, regardless of prevailing circumstances.
My hope is to bridge the diversity gap in STEM by creating excitement around Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math through diverse representation.

**My thoughts**
This is a fun book that I'd read with children kindergarten and above. Ethan's love of science and exploration really comes alive in all of the illustrations and help to clarify some of the ideas in his rhyming prose. The world of science is much more vast than we sometimes realize, and Ethan pretty much covers them all. It's a great way to start a conversation with kids about what they can explore and learn. Read it at home or put it in the classroom library to invite questions and curiosity.

Creating an Environment That Invites Curiosity
I wrote this book not from the perspective of an educator or a child psychologist, as I have no relevant credentials to speak of. But rather I wrote it from the perspective of a parent—a parent wishing to instigate in my son a curiosity for the way the world works, both in STEM and in the nuanced interplay of creativity, trial and error, experience, failure, and ultimately success.
I believe my lived experience as a child affords me at least a partially qualified opinion of how to foster a nutritious environment for the growth of ideas and possibilities. And so, for both my writing and my parenting, it is this inner child I draw upon, to guide my thoughts, words, and my actions so that I can sow small seeds of creative possibility.
Of course, if we are to achieve this ideal as parents, then we need to have actionable steps to take, to champion our children in their pursuit of knowledge and fulfillment.
Suspend judgment
I believe a fundamental practice, albeit extremely difficult, is to try to suspend judgment of our children: of their thoughts, their ideas, and their actions. We, ourselves, come with a set of preconceived ideas of how things should be based upon our own upbringing. However, it is imperative we learn to temper this (except where safety is concerned!) to truly allow them space to foster their own imaginations. And of course, this requires monk-level patience and self-control!
Create space for imperfection
We all know the common mantra “no one is perfect.” However, I believe we still intrinsically expect exactly that of ourselves and our children. And so we want our environments to be perfect (read: our messy lounges that are testament to the existence of happy children), our actions, our thoughts, our parenting, and ultimately our children. However, this simply cannot be, and in fact, is mutually exclusive to learning and creating. We, and our children, must fail to succeed.
And so for us, the action here is to make peace with the “messy,” the “imperfect,” and the “failures.” Because therein lies the key to true deep learning and boundless innovation.
Paint your children’s experiences with diversity
It is natural for humans to gravitate towards the familiar and the easy. After all, this is where our comfort zone keeps us well-insulated from anything remotely “threatening.” And we do this especially when we are tired or busy as the familiar is quicker and easier in the moment. However, I believe it is our duty to instill in our children a love of diversity, a curiosity of the differing minds and thoughts of people around them, and a healthy fascination with cultures and beliefs that contrast with their own.
To do this, we must take the time to study the different cultures that comprise our neighborhoods and our world for ourselves, in order to teach them to our kids. And perhaps the first and most important part of this is teaching them to ask respectful questions and to seek answers in a non-judgmental fashion, so that they may gain an understanding of the beautiful diversity of humans.
I really believe changing the world as we know it starts with changing ourselves and how we parent, what environments we create to support unhindered growth and realization of dreams, and what snippets of humanity we impart to our children in the form of curiosity, imagination, love, respect, and confidence. If we sow these little seeds now, who knows what the resulting forest will look like in its time.
With a natural and insatiable drive to build, explore, and understand, one of his fondest childhood memories is harvesting toasters, microwaves, TVs, and other discarded electronics in his Brooklyn neighborhood so he could take apart and rebuild them, or scavenge parts to build his own remote-controlled cars or planes.
He is the first to admit that nothing ever worked as intended, or at all, for that matter, but that never really mattered to him. As long as he was dissecting, constructing, exploring and learning, his cup was always full.
Today, his tinkering looks very different. Louis spends countless hours building and rebuilding Lego sets with his four-year-old son.
With any free time left after work and family life (usually late at night), you can find Louis in his workshop (any available free space with a flat surface) writing, painting, sculpting or toiling over his photography; nonetheless, his deep love for STEM remains, and at its core feeds his endless curiosity and desire to understand the inner workings of everything.

I was fortunate enough to start out in the elementary grades - progress to middle school - then spend some years at the high school level. Fortunate, because it gave me a much clearer picture of the progression of skills, than just reading about it.
Even during my student teaching days, I was intrigued with finding ways to get kids thinking and learning in a fun way. Of course, FUN can be an ambiguous term. But still, I was on the constant look out and constant dwelling on what could hook them just a little bit more and make them THINK just a little bit longer.
What I noticed, too, was that there were activities that were done in school that were good but, would not be replicated or done at home. And, there were some fun activities that were done at home that just didn't quite have enough content or thinking skills involvement that would allow for it to be justified in the classroom. What was MISSING were activities - games - books that families would enjoy enough to play and use together with OUT it being an "assignment" but teachers could use in the classroom.
I eventually went on to start Missing Piece Press, LLC. A publishing company that would publish those types of works. Over the years I have encouraged MANY to create these types of works. Besides books and games that got people THINKING, I also enjoyed writing verse. It probably not only stemmed from inspiration from my mom but, from learning how to play guitar and writing songs in college and later writing songs for the classroom.
I am MOST fortunate and SO blessed to have two wonderful, beautiful and talented daughters. One, happens to now be a graphic design illustrator and illustrated a story that I had written for the girls during my early years of teaching - Reindolphins. She is currently working on illustrating another one of my stories - we are both VERY excited about it.

This is another great collection of experiments that older kids can do pretty independently from adults. And younger kids can do them with some adult supervision. I've done some of these with the older fours and fives in my class. We had fun with bouncing balls, different kinds of rockets (like the balloon ones), and a volcano. So many more are waiting to be tried, though!
A lot of these items can be found around the house, but you may need to go shopping for some. It's another book that is going to provide weeks of entertainment while learning and a great part of this series.

This book is great for those who are really interested in plants. It goes into great detail about the parts of plants, the plant life cycle, and so many different types of flowers. Parts of it even remind me of a field guide. In fact, it's a lot like one that I had when I was a kid that I had inherited from my grandmother. Even the beautiful illustrations make me nostalgic for that. They're quite realistic, I think watercolors? I would have definitely had this book with me throughout the seasons as I explored my yard as a kid, or even to take to the park.

Although now living in Texas, I lived the first nine years of my life in Anaheim and Cypress, California. It was there that I had my first pet, Socky, a female rabbit and soon after, Buster, a male rabbit. Well, these two didn't last too long and at the age of almost six, I got my first guinea pig, Sparky. I love guinea pigs, and especially mine, and even though I showered him with love, he still needed a companion, so I talked my dad into getting Nellie, a female. She and Sparky had seven little ones over a period of two years!
After going through a long learning experience, I asked my dad if he thought it would be a good idea if I wrote a book about my experiences with my guinea pigs. He had been encouraging me to get a hobby or skill, so he was happy to hear about my interest in writing.

He was writing an ebook for Kindle and took me along with him to an ebook writing workshop and that was the beginning of my first book, Kid's Guide to Guinea Pigs.
At the workshop I met so many wonderful authors, around 300 of them, and they all had interesting subjects they were writing about and I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the event, even though I was the youngest one there!

This simple reader explains what kind of aircraft the hang glider is, its parts, and how it works. It also touches on safety. Each page has a striking photograph with just a few sentences explaining it. Young readers will be able to independently enjoy it, while nonreaders will appreciate having it read to them.
At the end, there is a review diagram of the parts of the glider, fun facts, a glossary, and sources for further reading. I enjoyed reading it and learned something new. Kids are going to love learning about a new way to have an adventure.

Review of 'Figuring Out Fossils' by Sally M. Walker
Description

The book is divided into short chapters, each of which answers a particular question about fossils. Real photographs help to illustrate the explanations that are given. Only a few sentences are on each page, which allows for a clean and simple read.
Terms are clearly defined within the book, leaving little room for confusion. There is also a glossary in the back. I felt like a lot of information was given in the book, and done so in a way that will be easy for young readers to understand. I definitely prefer the real photographs, so that children can better understand what fossils look like in real life. Young paleontologists will be inspired to start their own fossil hunts!
What I love about this series is that there are recommended books and websites at the back of the book, to give direction to those kids who are sure to want to learn even more. I would recommend this book for kindergarten/first grade and up.

Review of 'Discovery Channel's Top 10 Deadliest Sharks'
Sharks are one of the world's oldest and most ferocious predators. For as long as man has entered the sea, sharks have struck fear in their hearts. This groundbreaking graphic novel from Discovery Channel and Silver Dragon Books examines the world's deadliest sharks and sheds light on their true nature, refuting the notion that they are mindless killing machines, but in reality are among the most amazing and well adapted creatures on earth.
**My thoughts**
This book is great! It's presented in graphic novel format, which is going to appeal to the more reluctant reader who doesn't like a traditional book. It's chock full of facts about sharks, focusing more on their positive attributes than their gory stories. It also seeks to dispel the myths that surround shark attacks. You may be surprised at how few attacks are really recorded by some of these creatures. Some of the pictures are bloody and graphic. Being illustrations, though, seems to soften the gore.
The book also provides 10 safety tips for swimming in shark-infested waters. The biggest things are to not attract the sharks and to remember that the ocean is actually their home and domain. Be respectful of their territory.
Shark enthusiasts will love the facts and the stories contained within this graphic novel. I would not recommend it for really young readers, though, as it could scare some of them. You will have to use your judgment with your individual child to determine whether or not it is appropriate for him.
