Review of Bobby's Story (Mr. Grizley's Class) by Bryan Patrick Avery, illustrated by Arief Putra

When Bobby learns more about homelessness, he wants to tell his classmates and help make a difference. But everyone is busy and distracted by their own activities. Can he find a way to tell this important story?

(affiliate links included throughout)

**My thoughts**
This is a very short chapter book about a boy named Bobby who writes his own comic series about the Purple Potato. One day he literally runs into a high school girl named Ashley who is sharing flyers to raise awareness about homelessness. Bobby wants to help spread the world to his classmates, but has to find a clever way to get their attention.

What I like about this book is it is a call to action for kids to get involved in causes that are important to them. They learn how to make a flyer to support their cause. They are also encouraged to think of other ways to spread their message.

I was left wanting a bit more, though. A couple of facts about homelessness are included in the story. The kids get excited to help do something. I think it would have been a great time to introduce at least one actionable thing they could do to put on the flyer. And I think even showing us what Ashley's flyer looked like may have helped fuel that want. But this does provide a great foundation for more discussions with kids about important topics.

I did love the illustrations. They are very vibrant and show off the diverse classmates and captures their personalities.

I received a reuqested review copy from the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This series is available on Amazon Kids+.

Review of Isaiah Dunn Saves the Day by Kelly J. Baptist

Starting middle school is no joke! Isaiah Dunn has more to say in the sequel to the award-winning novel Isaiah Dunn Is My Hero. Friendship, community, and a love of words blend in this coming-of-age tale.

Things are looking up for super kid Isaiah Dunn. He and his little sister, Charlie, are getting used to staying with Miz Rita, and Mama's feeling better. Isaiah's poetry business with Angel is taking off, and his best friend, Sneaky, always has a new hustle. Plus, Isaiah has his dad's journals for a story or if he needs advice....

Like maybe now, because starting middle school is hard. Especially when his mentee Kobe won't stop making trouble. Isaiah knows something is up, but to get to the bottom of Kobe's secret, he'll have to rely on every hero he knows--including himself!

Discover the heartfelt and humorous sequel to the award-winning novel Isaiah Dunn Is My Hero.

(affiliate link included)

**My thoughts**
This is the second full-length middle-grade novel featuring my new favorite kid hero, Isaiah Dunn. I loved it as much as the first one. I already can't wait for the next one!

He's now starting middle school and his home life is more stable. His best friend, Sneaky, wants him to come play football. But Isaiah's first love is still the written word. Plus his business with Angel is expanding. And he still has his hours at Rock's barbershop. And then he's getting roped into Rockets Reach Back, a mentorship program that pairs him with a struggling elementary student. He is going to end up learning as much from Kobe as Kobe does from him.

I love this story because not only does Isaiah grow a lot within himself, but he learns how to help others. And while he is doing mentoring of his own, he is being mentored to through his job and others in his life. It's a great learning lesson for both kids and adults about how we can all do so much good, even with one seemingly simple act.

Isaiah Dunn is an important voice in children's literature and can appeal to so many readers. I hope we keep hearing his story for quite some time!

Thank you to the publisher for fulfilling my review request via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Kanga Superheros and Villans: Kangan Vs Mayhem by Patricia Bell

Interested in a middle-grade, YA for boys (10 to 15)? Here's a fun one to get them reading! Get a FREE copy with a newsletter subscription or $0.99 on Kindle!

A Bolt of Lightning. A Video Game. Kangan SuperPowers!

A lot can happen in the three milliseconds it takes for lightning to run through the body: Third-degree burns, singed hair, shredded clothes, explosives superheated five times hotter than the sun. Eardrums blow, cardiac arrest, or the heat could literally cook your brain … well, you get the idea, anyway.

So, imagine, the surprise after being struck by lightning at 4, while playing my favorite video game - KANGA: SUPERHEROES AND VILLAINS that I woke up with only a small scar on my wrist.

Shortly after, I began displaying the same powers as my character in the game, such as Super Punch and Mega Bounce to name a few. It’s a secret I’ve lived with for almost a decade, but recently it has been nearly impossible to keep.

Oh yeah, and as it turns out, I have an arch-enemy, Mayhem, and he’s out to harm someone very important to me.
There’s only one way to stop Mayhem, and I’m the only one who can do it.

Join me, Kangan, and my buddy Brennan, AKA Diesel, in this epic battle!

Friends to the End by C.L. Colyer

Friendship and adventure are the name of the game in Friends to the End by C.L. Colyer. Read an excerpt from this middle grade action adventure book and then learn a bit more about the author in a special guest post. Follow the tour for more! Best of luck in the giveaway!

Twelve-year-old Zach is convinced he'll never be happy without his best friend Jeremy by his side. But both of their lives changed with a bang five months ago, and as far as Zach's concerned, it's his fault Jeremy will never see his twelfth birthday.

When Zach moves with his family to a Chicago suburb, he quickly becomes friends with a group of thrill-seeking kids trying to find a disappearing haunted house. But Zach's not worried. He doesn't believe in ghosts, so he follows them into a wild, dangerous encounter that becomes a battle to decide what's real and what's not.

Read an excerpt:
My bewildered gaze slithered from Dom to Josh, finally coming to a stop on Morgan as I tried to decide if they were crazy.

“If the house is invisible, how do you expect to find it?” I asked.

Morgan sat on the stoop next to me. “It’s not always invisible. My brothers saw it once. They said it’s a big house with a long porch. It vanished before they could set foot on the first step, and I’m glad, too.”

“Why? What would have happened if they were on the steps?” I asked. Not because I believed an old ghost story had any truth to it, but I was curious to know what she’d say.

Morgan had to pick her jaw up from the walkway before she could answer, and when she did her voice came out in a high-pitched squeak. “If they had been on the porch or worse—” she swallowed loudly “—inside, they would have disappeared with it.”

You find yourself on a deserted island. What 10 things do you most wish to have?

I love this question.

  1. At the top of my list is a book on how to survive in the wild. Journey to the Center of the Earth might do, too. There are a lot of tips woven into the story.
  2. My husband or friends. I’d really hate to be stranded alone.
  3. Fresh water.
  4. Coffee. Please let there be coffee beans. I’ll learn how to roast them if it means a fresh cup of coffee each morning.
  5. Based on my recent experience lighting logs in a fireplace, I’m going to need help building a fire, so multiple lighters.
  6. Hairbands, because without my shampoo and conditioner my hair is going to be an uncontrollable wild mass of curls and frizz.
  7. My favorite pair of hiking boots. They’re warm, comfy, and grip the ground no matter the surface.
  8. A warm blanket in case it gets cold.
  9. A chest full of great fantasy books. I might not even notice I’m on a deserted island if I have enough reading material.
  10. Pens and journals. Just think of how much writing I could get done with all that free time!

Thanks, Andi, for having me on your wonderful blog. And thank you for stopping by!

C.L. Colyer found her love for writing in first grade when her class was sent to the library and asked to find a book for their first book report. While she doesn’t still have this book report, she’s very proud to say she got an A on it. Her favorite thing about the book was that it had no words. That’s right, not one! That gave her the freedom to interpret the pictures in any way she wanted and write her own story.

This sparked her love for writing essays. It wasn’t until she was an adult that she sat down and penned her first novel. This story has a special place in her heart because it’s the story that helped her discover her passion for writing. She has since written several books, many of which may never see the light of day, but all of which helped her learn to combine her passion for writing with her fascination with all things mythical. You’ll find examples of this in her novels.

She lives in Illinois with her family.

Review of A Bowl Full of Peace: A True Story by Caren Stelson, illustrated by Akira Kusaka

In this deeply moving nonfiction picture book, award-winning author Caren Stelson brings Sachiko Yasui's story of surviving the atomic bombing of Nagasaki and her message of peace to a young audience.

Sachiko's family home was about half a mile from where the atomic bomb fell on August 9, 1945. Her family experienced devastating loss. When they returned to the rubble where their home once stood, her father miraculously found their serving bowl fully intact. This delicate, green, leaf-shaped bowl—which once held their daily meals—now holds memories of the past and serves as a vessel of hope, peace, and new traditions for Sachiko and the surviving members of her family.

Book Links
(affiliate link included)

**My thoughts**
This may be a picture book, but it is definitely not a book for younger readers. This is more for your middle elementary and older children who are ready to hear the sobering tales from WWII. It is the tale of the bombing of Nagasaki and the horrific effects from that atomic bomb. Sachiko was only six years old when the bomb was dropped. It is miraculous that she survived, as most of those around her did not, whether being instantly killed or succumbing to residual disease some years later. It's a message about the horrors of nuclear weapons and the lesson that they should never be used again. But it also is a story that inspires hope, as it tells of the family heirloom that survived, the rituals that the family had before the bombing and the new ones of remembrance that they created after the bombing. And it speaks to having gratitude and humility.

This is a true story. At the end of the story is the story behind the story, along with pictures of the real Sachiko and the real bowl. The author gives insight as to why she felt compelled to tell this story and also provides resources for further reading. It would be useful for telling part of the history of that time and serves as a discussion launching point.

Also of note are the beautiful illustrations that are soft, yet still demonstrate some of the harsh reality of the history of the war. I felt they were quite powerful.

I have long been fascinated by WWII and the many stories surrounding it. This is one that will stay with me.

Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a requested review copy via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
