Jill wants to think about Halloween.

But Robby grabs the note, and before Linda stops talking it has gone halfway around the room.

That's where it all starts. There's something about Linda that makes a lot of kids in her fifth-grade class want to see how far they can go -- but nobody, least of all Jill, expects the fun to end where it does.
A New York Times Outstanding Book of the Year

Goodreads * Amazon

(affiliate links included)

**My thoughts**

Judy Blume's books were a staple of my childhood reading. Her books were so relevant to us at the time and she was actively publishing during my childhood. I remember reading Blubber when I was in about the 4th grade and really felt like I related to Linda because I was that chunky girl in my class. In fact, the title of this book likely did encourage some of the kids to give me the same moniker, though I somewhat ignored them. And I also sort of related to Jill and her friends, because I know I was a part of making fun of other children as well.

Fast forward to me being a middle-aged adult. I almost cringe reading this now. Narrator Jill is much nastier about Linda than I remember reading when I was a kid. If that isn't bad enough, I can hear her words in my own voice, reminding me of how mean I could also be as a kid. [I feel like we all had our moments.] And I don't think it hit me as hard back then how bullied Jill was as well, particularly for not following along with Wendy and her crew all the time. I'd like to think that in the past several years, we've been working on teaching children to act better. But the problem continues to persist, at least as bad as depicted in this story.

For the first time, I realized that this book also tackles children bullying adults, as they go after their neighbor, Mr. Machinist, on Halloween. This is something that we don't often think about when we are talking about kids and how they treat others.

And then there is my teacher side. I've been an educator my entire adult life. It also hurts me to see teachers portrayed as not noticing the bullying going on. And yet, I know that's a sad fact of life, even today. I like to think that I'm more on top of it than my peers in the field. But I also work with younger children, so it's different. Even worse is how some of the teachers are also doing some of the bullying. I know everyone would like to think that teachers don't do that, but I continue to witness some appalling behavior and comments out of teachers to this day.

But I'm glad that it hurts and has an impact on me, even as an adult. It just proves to me that this book is still important. Bullying is sadly an ongoing issue among children [and adults], and something that I'm not sure we'll ever completely eradicate. But reading a book like this could easily provoke some good conversations between adults and children. Some children may recognize themselves in the story, which is also important. My hope is that they would be more aware of their own words and actions and make the appropriate adjustments.

Andihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02800570277515611505noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2767137071921691612.post-23303090359801323672023-06-15T04:00:00.001-04:002023-06-15T04:00:00.134-04:00Tales of the Forgotten Founders by C.W. When the siblings discover a stash of banned books, they realize everything they’ve been told about Falinnheim’s history might be a lie. And though contact between worlds has been cut off for centuries, returning home might not be as impossible as their parents claim.

Could the adventures of a runaway monk, a reluctant viking, a silent ambassador, and a rebel librarian hold the solutions to both problems? To find the truth, Tuesday and Zed will have to learn the stories of Falinnheim’s forgotten founders.

Read an excerpt:

The tale of Cyril the Librarian begins with a library, a fire, and a daring plan.

This story is not about Cyril. But all stories are connected, just as all people are, so this is where we must begin. We’ll get to Selene in a minute.

Long, long before Cyril’s story began, a man named Alexander ruled the world. At least, that’s what Alexander decided to tell everyone. In reality, he didn't even know about most of the world, let alone run it. But Alexander came from a long line of kings and was the student of a long line of philosophers and generals, each with their own roots in legendary tales of heroism and greatness. The only way young Alexander could see to take his place among their stories was to create one of his own. So when he’d finished taking over all the lands and kingdoms he knew about, he proclaimed those were all the lands that existed.

Alexander was an ambitious man, but not a terribly creative one, so the title he took to celebrate his achievements was simply Alexander the Great. (A better name than Alexander the Adequate, you must admit. But still—not the most original.) He became king of Macedon at the age of twenty, and by the age of thirty he was king of Greece, Babylon, Persia, and Egypt as well. And by the age of thirty-two, he was dead.

He was called Alexander the Great, not Alexander the Healthy and Long-lived.

This story is not about Alexander either.

Available in ebook, hardcover, and paperback!

(affiliate links included)

What’s Next?

A sneak peek into the world of Otherland

by C.W. Allen

Tales of the Forgotten Founders is the third and final installment in the Falinnheim Chronicles series. I’ve had such a fantastic time exploring the world of Falinnheim and getting to know Zed, Tuesday, and the rest of the crew! Ending a series might seem bittersweet, but in reality I’m so excited to finally spill all the beans about the worldbuilding mysteries I’ve had to hold back in the first two books.

So, what’s next? I’m so glad you asked, because I’m REALLY excited about it. My next project explores an entirely different setting from Falinnheim. Mellie Morton Is Not Imaginary takes characters from international mythology and forces them to live in the same neighborhood. Here’s the plot:

Mellie Morton has enough trouble navigating the foster care system and dodging bullies (kids and adults alike). But when a dare sends her through an empty door frame in a vacant lot, she discovers a whole new world of problems: now she's stranded in Otherland, home to the world's myths and legends, who insist she's made up as well. If she can't find a way to prove she's real, she'll be trapped in Otherland forever. And in Otherland, people only last as long as their stories—once Reality forgets her, she'll disappear entirely.

Mellie enlists the help of a notorious outlaw and a talking fox in her race to find a way home before time runs out. But first, they'll have to talk their way out of jail, complete a fairy's treasure hunt, fulfil an oracle's prophecy, and confront Mellie's nemesis: Santa Claus. In learning what it means to be real, Mellie has a chance to write her own story, and change both worlds in the process.

I had an absolute blast getting to work with an evil tooth fairy, a mischievous Japanese fox-spirit, a West African spider librarian, a legendary Chinese warrior, and fourteen Icelandic Christmas ogres all in the same story. So even though Zed and Tuesday’s adventures are coming to an end, there’s lots of great stuff to look forward to in my next series! Look for Mellie Morton is Not Imaginary, coming from Cinnabar Moth Publishing in summer 2024.

C.W. Allen is a Nebraskan by birth, a Texan by experience, a Hoosier by marriage, and a Utahn by geography. She knew she wanted to be a writer the moment she read The Westing Game at age twelve, but took a few detours along the way as a veterinary nurse, an appliance repair secretary, and a homeschool parent. She writes long stories for children and short stories for former children. When she’s not writing, she helps other writers hone their craft as a board member of the League of Utah Writers.

Her debut novel Relatively Normal Secrets is the winner of the Gold Quill Award, being named the best children’s book of the year by a Utah author. The Falinnheim Chronicles series continues with The Secret Benefits of Invisibility (Cinnabar Moth, 2022) and Tales of the Forgotten Founders (Cinnabar Moth, 2023). She longs for a different life, with more freedom and fun. But she gets more than she bargains for when she discovers an alarming family secret and is swept away on an adventure 64,000 light years from Earth. Tanzanian witch doctors, child-eating lions, and submarine exploration on a two-mooned planet enliven this science fiction fantasy adventure, the third in Ballard’s award-winning Tales by Moons-light series.

Read an exclusive excerpt:

As they neared the back of the plane, a middle-aged African man seated on the aisle motioned for Elvia to stop. He was wearing traditional clothing: a yellow robe and a striped cap. Reaching out to touch her long, red hair, he asked in a thick accent, “May I? It’s so beautiful.”

Elvia nodded, pleased by the man’s attention, but Earl stiffened, a protective fatherly sixth sense kicking in. The passenger was too eager, almost hungry, as his hand found its mark. The glint in his eye was evil—the hairs on Earl’s neck stood on end—and he instinctively pushed Elvia ahead of him, toward the tiny restrooms at the far back, where they turned around and headed up the opposite aisle.

When they arrived back at their seats, Earl leaned over and quietly told Sally about the unnerving incident. They were only six hours into the trip, and there was already trouble.

“Do you think he’s dangerous?” Sally asked worriedly, also keeping her voice low.

“I don’t know. But keep an eye on Elvia when we get to Amsterdam. I don’t want that man getting anywhere near her.”

When the mighty plane touched down and they disembarked into the terminal, Sally protectively steered Elvia into the nearest gift shop. Meanwhile, Earl scanned the visual display announcing arrivals and departures, looking for their Air Twiga flight.

“Tanzania?” asked a deep voice behind him. Earl turned around and found himself face-to-face with the man in the yellow robe. They were about the same height: six feet give or take an inch.

“Yes,” Earl replied warily. “Why do you ask?”

The man eased forward and slipped a business card into Earl’s hand, giving him a smile and a wink as if they were co-conspirators in a crime.

“I’ll give you the best price. Guaranteed,” he whispered, as if worried someone might be listening in.

Earl examined the crudely made card. The man’s name was Jelani Kibiki, and he ran a company called True Believers in Arusha.

“Price for what?” Earl asked, his frown deepening. “I’m not selling anything.”

Jelani blinked, and Earl suddenly realized that the man was sweating. Beads of salty perspiration glistened on his brow, reflecting the harsh airport lights.

“You’re not?” Jelani asked, his eyes growing wide.

Repulsed, Earl backed away and replied, “No. You’ve made a mistake.”

Jelani retreated, too, no longer buddy-buddy.

“I’m sorry, sir,” he said briskly. “I thought you were a businessman.”

“No, I’m a tourist. I’m taking my family on safari,” Earl replied, glad to be setting the record straight. Intimidated by science as a kid, she almost gave up on pursuing it as a career though she found it fascinating. Fortunately, a mentor stepped in and showed her the way. Now, she’s passionate about doing the same for the next generation of science shy, but creative, smart and capable kids. Her award-winning science fantasy adventures lure children in with compelling characters and entertaining, twisty plots that incorporate science in fun, accessible ways.

When Ruthy isn’t writing, she is “Dr. Ruth Ballard,” a forensic DNA consultant and a professor at Sacramento State, where she runs a forensic biology research and training program while consulting with attorneys across the country on criminal cases involving DNA evidence. She’s also a folk artist who loves to draw, illustrates her own books, and enjoys hiking and camping with her husband and their four dogs near their home on the Oregon coast.

Links:
YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvNsOhYVGUl_5pHLGyLG8NA
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RuthyBallard/
Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/ruthyballard
Good Reads: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/16577223.Ruthy_Ballard
Amazon author page: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Ruthy-Ballard/author/B06Y6KVX5D

The author will be awarding a $25 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.

These exercises are linked to the website, so you can still easily work through this as a Kindle copy or as a paperback workbook. Mila is fascinated by the new girl in class, but isn't sure how to approach her. She has a wonderful conversation with her mother, strategizing about how to reach out and to "grow her circle" of people in her life. It's something that we all need to learn how to do - get to know other people outside of our comfort zone of the usual suspects. And the two girls learn a lot about becoming friends, their similiarities and differences. The intertwining of their worlds makes their worlds grow and thrive. Parts of their story reminds me of my own childhood, meeting new people from diverse backgrounds and having our families get to know each other.

The story really does seem to come from a young girl, as the accompanying illustrations are more juvenile than you usually see in books. It makes me feel like a child actually did the bulk of it. I think that could inspire children to maybe make their own friendship stories and books.

There's also the social media aspect where the kids come up with the hashtag #GrowYourCircle. If appropriate, it could turn into a class project to see if they could create their own special project to fulfill this hashtag and its ideas. At the very least, there are activities at the end of the book that could be used in the classroom or even at home.

I received a requested review copy from the publisher. She’s courageous and has a beautiful singing voice, but lacks the power of an elemental, the ability to command water with the sound of her voice. Jealous of her best friend, she makes a deal with a sea-witch, only to be betrayed, in place of her beautiful tail and flukes Daphne’s left beached with a pair of human legs. The spell keeping Daphne looking human will become permanent, unless Daphne can hunt down and bring the scheming Lorelei a unicorn horn before the next full moon.

Unable to reach her friends and family for help, Daphne doesn’t know how to walk, much less where to find a unicorn or how to catch one. Even if she’s successful, Daphne’s still not sure if she can trust Lorelei and her pint-sized kraken to keep their end of the bargain and let her return to the sea.

Read an excerpt:

"You'll see lots as you travel from place to place," Daphne told the small dolphin. "Come, your mother won't forgive me if I let you roam from the pod."

Why hurry? Echor asked as he swam, spinning around different plants and sponges that grew along the rocks, before focusing in on a vibrant snail. It was not a very old reef, though it was well inhabited by many vividly-colored, small fish. The young dolphin seemed to take pleasure in disturbing them and watching them scurry into their small hiding crevices and among the anemones. You're so lucky that you get to stay in your town all the time. This part of the sea is so beautiful!

"I think it would be neat to see so much of the ocean," Daphne said, thinking of her small town of Thranda. Unlike the dolphins, who often travelled long distances in a single day, most merfolk lived in towns unless they left their communities to hunt or travel to another community. She had known members of his family since she was a little mermaid, and only got to see them a few times a year when they passed through her home to feed in a nearby bay. She heard a series of warnings behind her—the other dolphins had detected something with their echolocation. Unless it was something exceptionally large, they should have been safe within the pod, but Echor was very young. "Echor, let's return to your family." The young dolphin had wandered off while Daphne had turned her head, chasing a seal that had left her bob, trying to swim away from Echor.

"Echor!" Daphne called, swimming after him. She caught up to him, then looked over her shoulder as she heard a familiar sound. An orca! Daphne suppressed a shudder. It was large, but far enough away for her to find a hiding space. Still, killer whales almost always travelled in groups. The killer whale dove when he spotted her. She knew the others would want to help, but they were no match for an orca. He swam quickly towards her and Echor. Daphne knew she would be hard pressed to out-swim the large creature.

Hide! the orca told her.

Daphne then saw the immense shadow and wooden keel of a ship following the orca. The killer whale dove deep, though the water was too clear and shallow to truly hide his massive form. A harpoon followed him, missed, and was quickly pulled back to the surface by a rope. Another harpoon plunged into the water, and then another. The rough waters churned green and grey in the ship's wake, and Echor's warning chatter only told her that there was another human vessel. It came from Daphne's left, and it dragged a net behind it.

Book Links

Amazon (American) * Amazon (Canadian) * Kobo * Goodreads * Barnes and Noble

(affiliate link included)

Character Creation: Making Daphne Flawed and Likeable

I started writing young, and to be honest, when I was making characters they were little more than extensions of myself and they played in a story like a video game. This wasn’t just for heroes, but for villains and side characters. Sure, they had superficial attributes, but unless I spent any length of time with them they generally didn’t develop any depth. The problem was their flaws and personality were an after thought, as opposed to intrinsically considered while I was drafting the story. I’m not saying I set out knowing the characters now, but I usually consider the theme and what makes them unique and interesting and make their actions in the story feel organic as opposed to forced.

For Daphne, the idea was about telling a story about a character who isn’t The Chosen One and doesn’t have the rare power. I also wanted Daphne to be someone who the readers would root for. Rather than shove, “she’s jealous, here’s why” I wanted to make her relatable to a young audience but have something in it for older readers as well.

We’re introduced to Daphne and her best friend another mermaid named Oshiera jumping in the rolling waves with young dolphins, and the story point blank tells the audience Daphne hated to lose to anyone. She’s competitive; not a bad thing but I’m sure we’ve all heard of Sore Losers, there’s also such a thing as being a Lousy Winner or The Person Who Takes Competition Too Far. Before I made it obvious that this was a flaw I showed she was a brave character. Within the first few pages, she leaves the safety of the pod and go after a wayward young dolphin, and even answer the distress call of a young orca under the pursuit of whalers, and she’s rightfully afraid of the killer whale. She’s not training in the ways of the warrior class or a princess skipping out on her duties, and she’s only interacting with humans to save the orca, not maliciously trying to hurt anyone or inadvertently causing them trouble out of misplaced curiosity. She’s adventurous and brave, but within the first pages of meeting her, the reader knows she’ll help someone in trouble if it’s in her power to do so. Mostly positive stuff.

Shortly thereafter the jealousy rears its ugly head, and the story kicks off. Oshiera is confirmed as being the very rare elemental; she can command water with her voice, and her life changes overnight, and she hates it. Daphne is inches from greatness, and she knows it.

She doesn’t even want it. Why isn’t it me?

So we have a brave, mostly capable young heroine with a competitive streak that can manifest in jealousy. I use this as the catalyst for being manipulated by the sea witch and next thing Daphne knows, she’s learning to count piggies and told she must retrieve a unicorn horn if she ever wants to go home again.

Daphne’s quest is for the horn, but her real problem is that she was manipulated, and even though she’s not a bad person, the trait of wanting to be the best over everyone else rears up throughout her journey to the unicorns.

Daphne’s jealousy ultimately stems from being insecure. She doesn’t come across as insecure at all – a little proud maybe, but when her self-perceived identity is shattered – anything you can do I can do better – her insecurity manifests. She compares her singing voice to Esperanza’s, the first time stating “It’s better for that song. Mine’s still better” and then later on blurting out Esperanza does have the better voice. Even though it’s obvious to everyone but Espy, knowing Sean has a crush on Esperanza still asks if he thinks she (Daphne) is pretty and then asks him about fessing up to Espy. Daphne soon does find the individual with the best voice she’s ever heard (not the person she expected) and she doesn’t ‘steal’ Sean from Esperanza, in the story she matures and realizes that she doesn’t have to be the best at everything or everyone’s first choice to do what’s right even when it seems like it’s not in her best interest or is even dangerous to do so. Daphne’s value is intrinsic; whether or not she’s pretty, has a beautiful singing voice, or has a tail or a pair of legs, what matters is doing the right thing and helping others when it’s in her power to do so. She abandons her friends and sets out for the horn alone, because part of her knows what she’s doing is wrong, even if she doesn’t know why.

The co-heroine was designed to help highlight Daphne’s flaws. Esperanza is a human with a very different back story. Daphne meets her selling eggs and milk in the town square, and Esperanza instantly is dismissive of her because Daphne’s working at the bakery, and the baker is implied to be taking advantage of her family.

Esperanza’s family is on hard times; their father was arrested on a false charge and the family is being slowly squeezed to force them to sell their farm. Esperanza’s brother takes pity on Daphne and they take her home for some supper and somewhere safe to sleep. Daphne and Esperanza bond over the course of the next day, Esperanza helping Daphne get work (and do the work) and Daphne pushing Espy out of her comfort zone.

Superficially, Esperanza comes across as the more mature, selfless one. She doesn’t like her fate but accepts it dutifully.

Esperanza’s problem doesn’t stem from a lack of money, and it’s implied that there’s no way she could earn enough as a maid to help her family out of their predicament, so much as allow them to keep treading water. Singing the song that should have won her the local contest would never have really helped her situation – but singing and jigging to a popular, rowdy song with Daphne where the crowd threw money in the pot did give her family enough cash to fix a superficial issue and get them on their feet again. Her stopping being dutiful for duties’ sake seems a little foolish and selfish, but led her to not only adventure, but a means to save her father, and finding out why the local gentry wanted the farm so much anyway.

A beginner’s mistake about being selfless is the idea of self-sacrifice for other people seems good, but often times there’s no amount of sacrifice most of us can make that will help change the bigger issues at hand. Esperanza is also insecure, thinking she has to do something to try to solve problems bigger than her. Really, it’s still all about Esperanza and her singing and her family and can’t everyone see how self-sacrificing she is? Helping Daphne initially hurts her, but it’s in Esperanza’s power to do so. What’s not in her power is what’s going on with her family – she’s a fourteen year old girl and they’re scheming nobles and wizards. But genuinely helping another person, with no expectation or reward, was the mechanism that allowed her family to save the farm.

There’s more to the story and once I get these major characters designed and acting, it’s actually pretty easy to fill in the blanks about what they’re like and why they are that way. For instance, throughout the novel it is very clear that Daphne is not a morning person, while Espy is always up and cheerful. Esperanza grew up on a farm with chickens, while Daphne lived under the sea, she’s not used to getting up at the crack of dawn. Little details like this don’t need to be explained to your reader – and can often be a little treat for readers revisiting that same novel later.

About the author:
L.T. Isaiah Dunn has more to say in the sequel to the award-winning novel Isaiah Dunn Is My Hero. Friendship, community, and a love of words blend in this coming-of-age tale.

Things are looking up for super kid Isaiah Dunn. He and his little sister, Charlie, are getting used to staying with Miz Rita, and Mama's feeling better. Isaiah's poetry business with Angel is taking off, and his best friend, Sneaky, always has a new hustle. Plus, Isaiah has his dad's journals for a story or if he needs advice....

Like maybe now, because starting middle school is hard. Especially when his mentee Kobe won't stop making trouble. Isaiah knows something is up, but to get to the bottom of Kobe's secret, he'll have to rely on every hero he knows--including himself!

Discover the heartfelt and humorous sequel to the award-winning novel Isaiah Dunn Is My Hero.

Goodreads * Amazon * BN

(affiliate link included)

**My thoughts**

This is the second full-length middle-grade novel featuring my new favorite kid hero, Isaiah Dunn. With a school bus falling from the sky. But no one saw it happen. They were all too busy—

Talking about boogers.
Stealing pocket change.
Skateboarding.
Wiping out.
Braving up.
Executing complicated handshakes.
Planning an escape.
Making jokes.
Lotioning up.
Finding comfort.
But mostly, too busy walking home.

Jason Reynolds conjures ten tales (one per block) about what happens after the dismissal bell rings, and brilliantly weaves them into one wickedly funny, piercingly poignant look at the detours we face on the walk home, and in life.

Goodreads * Amazon * BN

(affiliate link included)

**My thoughts**

Not all children get to live the charmed life of those on Klickitat Street. No disrespect to my beloved Beverly Cleary. It's important for them to have books available that reflect their own situations. And Look Both Ways by Jason Reynolds brings some of those to light.

I think more kids will find themselves in one of these stories than we realize. I think this is a great book for upper elementary and older to read and discuss. Maybe they can help identify similar situations happening in their own schools and neighborhoods. Maybe they can try to strategize how to handle those situations.

And for those kids who do not necessarily recognize themselves in these stories and sitautions, perhaps they will gain more empathy for others. It's good to branch out and read about a variety of people and places. And sometimes you realize how much more alike we all can be at times.

I liked how one of the characters was returning to school after having a flare up from her sickle cell anemia - not that she was sick, but because that population was being represented. I got a kick out of watching the kids scheme to earn money. And then there is the kid who is trying to woo a girl and realizes that he literally stinks. You have the girl who is trying to be a comedienne and the boy who kisses another boy. It's all real life but also fun fiction.

I think adults need to read this so that they are better aware of what is going on and can be on a better lookout for such bullying occurring. But also they just need to remember what it is like to be a kid.

This is my second book by Jason Reynolds that I've read, and the first fiction. I can't wait to read more.
Andihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02800570277515611505noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2767137071921691612.post-40304718712946592252022-08-08T19:11:00.000-04:002022-08-08T19:11:11.151-04:00Nat Geo Kids Dinosaur Books Giveaway (Ends 9/5) @NGKidsBks @HomeJobsByMom

Welcome To The Nat Geo Kids Dinosaur Books Giveaway!

It's summertime, and Sophie, her best friend, Chloe, and her younger brother, Cole are spending two fun-filled weeks in Corpus Christi, Texas with her young-at-heart grandmother. A surprise discovery on a day out at the beach takes them on a quest for riches. During their search, the kids snorkel, encounter endangered sea turtles, visit a World War II warship, and learn that honesty and true friendship are worth more than gold.

Read an excerpt:

Spooked, I backtrack on the slippery sand like I’m dancing the moonwalk.

Eek!

I almost step on a fish skeleton that includes a full set of teeth. Whatever ate the fish cleaned its bones. Creepy.

“Why’re you jumping around like that, Sophie?” asks Cole. “I thought you said we should be careful, so we don’t accidentally step on any baby turtles?”

“Look!” I gesture toward the cove, and Granny, Cole, and Chloe gather around.

What I thought was a rock wiggles again. It seems too heavy to be a piece of paper. Is it an old trash bag? A dead animal?

“Is that rock shaking?” Chloe leans in.

“I think so,” I answer.

This is weird. I’d have goosebumps if the sun wasn’t burning my arms. I rub my forehead with the back of my hand to stop sweat from dripping into my eyes.

Peering closer, I recognize what I see. “It’s a sea turtle!” I exclaim.

At first, the reptile’s head was inside its shell, so we didn’t recognize it. It’s nearly the size of a dinner plate. Somehow, Cole’s baseball cap is attached to one of its back flippers.

“Check that thing out!” His eyes widen.

This is my first time seeing a grown sea turtle up close.

“Good morning, Mr. Turtle!” I sing-song.

Its shell is dark, grayish-green, and its body is white. The reptile’s nose reminds me of a beak.

Spotting us, the turtle shuffles its legs to flee, but its shell sticks like glue to the rocks underneath.

(affiliate links included below)

Available on Amazon in hardcover, paperback, and for Kindle!

Book One - Queen of the Bee is free!

Find the whole series on Amazon!

**My thoughts**
It's summer vacation and our friend Sopnie is away visiting her grandmother with her little brother Cole and her best friend Chloe. One day while at the beach, they come across a buried treasure of sorts that sends them on a scavenger hunt based on written clues. It's a fun way to squeeze in a little science and history! And it brought back memories of geocaching with my aunt.

As always, there are some life lessons happening. Sophie learns about taking things for granted and how parents/families have different ways of showing their love for each other. She learns about honesty and caring for others. And she also makes a mistake that puts her friendship with Chloe to the test. I'm not giving away any details, but the feelings involved in all of these situations are quite common. A lot of children will relate.

I also appreciate the way Granny handles the whole situation. Adults, take note!

Each book in this series is relatable and entertaining while also being subtly educational. They all work as standalones, but I recommend reading all of them. It needed to be kicked up a notch, so with my turn that is precisely what I did.

“Double Dare,” I said, skipping right over Dare.

Everyone looked at me as if to say, Wow, this is getting serious.

Mindy would deliver the Double Dare. “Kiss Sarah,” Mindy said.

There was a pause.

“On the LIPS!” Samantha added.

Whoa! It was just too much for me. I could tell Sarah wouldn’t mind, which was making me even more excited. But I couldn’t go through with it. It just wasn’t time.

“What about the cheek instead?” I asked.

“Well, as the official judge, I think switching from lips to cheek is fine…it’s still a kiss,” Sarah said playfully.

“Well get to it Shane!” said Noah. “What are you waiting for?”

I moved in quickly, planted my lips to Sarah’s cheek then removed them. While I did not see fireworks like Bobby did on The Brady Bunch, it was still amazing! The feeling of my lips on her skin was the most wonderful feeling I had ever felt. And it was made all the better by the wonderful smell that surrounded her, which I couldn’t exactly place.

“What flavour?” I asked in a mild trance.

“Green apple,” she said holding up her green Lip Smacker container.

For Sarah’s turn, she had to kiss ME on the cheek. We learned both French and Spanish at school and I had an aunt from Costa Rica. So they were all around me. I remember thinking it was funny how animals supposedly said different words in other countries. That was when I first learned about onomatopeia, which is what this book is all about.

It's a fun trek around the world to learn how the same sound is interpreted differently in a ton of different languages, with some fun animal facts thrown in. (And did you know that Old MacDonald actually has different names around the world as well?) Their sounds are given in word bubbles next to cute cartoon pictures of each animal. The language is listed underneath. I read a lot of these words using English phonics. It would be nice to have a pronunciation guide to make sure we are saying them correctly, though I did appreciate seeing how these words are spelled in the different languages and alphabets. And I had a major issue with the languages being listed underneath the words and NOT capitalized. That's grammatically incorrect and could lead to kids forgetting to capitalize their languages when writing. The teacher in me was twitching with that part.

The book continues past the animals with other sound words that we encounter in our world, like creaking, knocking, bells ringing, weather, and more. There's also a little bit of history about the theories behind how the different sounds are reproduced in the various languages. It was highly interesting!

Thank you to the publisher for fulfilling my review request via NetGalley. Lots of kids deal with moving, starting new schools, and doing chores. But normally, those schools aren't in underground bunkers full of secret agents, and the chore list doesn't involve herding dodos. The one thing that hasn't changed: all the adults treat them like they're invisible.

When a security breach interrupts a school field trip, the siblings find themselves locked out of the Resistance base. With the adults trapped inside, it's up to Tuesday, Zed, and their friends to save the day. And for once, being ignored and underestimated is coming in handy. After all, who would suspect a bunch of kids are capable of taking down the intruders that captured their families, let alone the murderous dictator that put them into hiding in the first place?

Turns out invisibility might just have its benefits.

Read an excerpt:

Fariq lifted the latch and stepped back to let the doors swing slowly open. An avalanche of dodos poured out, brushing past them like a flock of short, grumpy businessmen in dusty grey suits, impatiently bustling around a train station on their way somewhere more important.

Zed jumped out of the way and whipped out his notebook and pencil. Tuesday jumped too, but more in alarm than amazement.

"Augh!" she yelled. "Why are they so big?" She flinched away as one of the dodos brushed past her leg. Its bald, leathery face came all the way up to her hip.

Zed was too busy sketching to look up. "What were you expecting?"

"I don't know!" Tuesday blathered. "Smaller, I guess! Slower. Dumber. More like chickens!"

It would have taken a Leaning Tower of Chickens stacked three high to see eye to eye with a dodo. They looked like gigantic turkeys with their tail feathers plucked and stunted wings tucked in by their sides, with bulbous bike horns for heads. It was like someone cobbled together a Frankenbird out of spare parts as a prank.

"It's okay," said Fariq in his customary monotone. "Bird phobias are really common. I don't like spiders much, myself."

"I'm not afraid of them," Tuesday protested. "Just…surprised."

Celia brushed past them with her rake, dropping a derisive chuckle as she passed. "Honestly, it's like you've never seen a common dodo before. You panic about worms in the garden wing too? Or is Her Highness too important to get her hands dirty with the commoners?"

Amazon * BN * Booktopia

(affiliate links included)

Writing Middle Grade: The Power of In-Between

by C.W. Allen

While I have published a few short stories and essays for adults, my true love and the bulk of my publishing effort is definitely with middle grade novels, especially stories with a mystery or speculative angle. It's what I read in my free time, and it's where my storytelling naturally drifts. There's a mantra that goes around the writing community: "Write the book you want to read." This is definitely true, since a writer will need that fire for the story to keep slogging through the long writing process, and the often unforgiving publishing process after that. But I think there's an extra layer of meaning to the mantra, that it's a privilege to contribute to the body of work that sustained me through my own tween years (and beyond). There's no feeling in the world like seeing your own story on the same library and bookstore shelves as your heroes.

I so vividly remember what it felt like to be my readers' age. Being a tween is equally frustrating and magical. On one hand, there's a sense of being stuck in-between: too young for teen privileges, but old enough that adults have more expectations of you. On the other hand, being in-between can be a kind of superpower: middle grade readers are capable enough to do things independently, but still young enough to have a sense of wonder, creativity, and idealism that the world often leeches out of people as they age. I think this dynamic creates a lot of interesting opportunities for characters to have independent adventures while still seeing the world differently than adults do. It also presents some unique challenges. An adult character is in charge of their own money, schedule, and transportation. They don't need permission to do things. Even if their decisions might have negative consequences, doing what they want is still a matter of simply choosing to. Kids have a lot more restrictions, which creates more interesting plot hurdles for the characters to get over.

I have another mantra I try to apply to all my writing: I want to create "stories where kids succeed because they're kids, not in spite of it." I want my characters to show off the superpowers kids have, the skills adults forget about, rather than pulling off their successes "okay for a kid, I guess". This is a major focus in The Secret Benefits of Invisibility, where the kids find out that being ignored and underestimated makes them ideal candidates for spy missions! I hope my readers will see themselves in the characters' struggles and cheer their victories, and take away some extra confidence about fighting their own battles, whatever they may be.

She recently settled in the high desert of rural Utah with her husband, their three children, and a noisy flock of orphaned ideas. Someday she will create literary homes for all of them. (The ideas, not her family.)

Relatively Normal Secrets (Cinnabar Moth Publishing, Fall 2021) is her debut novel. She writes fantasy novels for tweens, picture books for children, and short stories and poems for former children. Her work will appear in numerous anthologies in 2021. She is also a frequent guest presenter at writing conferences and club meetings, which helps her procrastinate knuckling down to any actual writing.

https://www.amazon.com/C-W-Allen/e/B098Q2PRGY

https://twitter.com/cwallenbooks

https://cinnabarmoth.com/cw-allen/

C. But what will happen when that adventure finds her?

Long ago, faeries were banished from the land after a legendary battle. So long ago that many wonder if faeries really exist or if the battle was just a tall tale. But one mysterious night, Macy's mother is attacked, and ever since, unusual things start happening. Missing items, changing moods, and most strange of all, the family's sheep start behaving unusually.

Her mother is suddenly determined to get rid of the sheep, and Macy suspects that the reason may be sinister. When Macy meets a boy her age, the aloof and sarcastic Jay, they embark on a journey to discover the truth and save her mother. If Alyssa can’t learn to master her magic soon, she will be cursed to forget her loved ones and serve as the warlock’s slave for all of eternity.

Her only hope is to focus on controlling her emotions if she is to break the curse. However, the difficulties of adolescence, along with the perils and growing disasters she faces, make Alyssa struggle even more. From putting her friends’ lives at risk to losing their trust, she continues to fear what will become of her if she fails.

Will Alyssa be able to break the hex and become the enchantress that she was meant to be, or will she become enslaved to the sorcerer forever?

Read an excerpt:

Alyssa could not risk performing sorcery anymore after ridding herself in autumn of the powers that a warlock had forced upon her. A skeleton called Errol had jinxed her with involuntary magic, landing her in lots of trouble, including near-expulsion from school. He had claimed that it’d been the only way for him to regain his old, human looks. Alyssa had needed to boost her confidence and bravery levels in order to overthrow Errol. That had taken a few weeks.

She would not allow this new hex to force her to remain home all summer. Otherwise, she’d have to miss travel camp at the end of this month and a trip to New York City with Alex in August.

Her palms heated, and beams shot out, bouncing against the ceiling and splitting in different directions. One tipped the bookshelf, and all the books tumbled out onto the wooden floor. It merged with the other shaft, smashed into the desk—knocking everything down—and disappeared in a snap.

Alyssa stared, her fist clenching and her face reddening. Without admonishment, another glimmer flew out of her hands and hit her bed, causing everything to tumble into the air. The blankets crumpled, and a few pillows were tossed onto the rug by the mattress. The ray vanished.

Alyssa gazed into her palms because that catastrophe reminded her of the enchantments she’d performed in the fall.

“Ugh!” She covered her face.

The downstairs door shut, suggesting that Alex had returned from walking Scooter, the yellow lab.

“Alyssa, is everything okay?” he asked.

“No!” She sat on her bed, not wanting to remake it, even though Alex required it when she didn’t have school. I’m never going to get through this stupid mess.

Buy on Amazon

(affiliate link included)

If My Books Were Turned into Movies

A lot of authors dream of having their books make it to the silver screen. However, it’s usually only traditional publishers who are major bestsellers who get to sell movie rights. But once that happens, unless they are highly elite, like J.K. Rowling, they don’t get to have any creative control whatsoever.

What I notice, though, is that with those movies, it is common for them to get mixed or mostly negative reviews from the books’ fans and readers. They will complain about elements that were cut or changed, such as how a character looked or acted nothing like he or she did in the books. Even the authors become dissatisfied with their movie adaptations. Many successful book series only get a few films at most since they basically fail to please audiences.

Filmmakers, however, state that if authors not big like J.K. Rowling got to be involved with the movie-making of their books, it would be unlikely to succeed. They say that what looks fine in text would not necessarily translate well to the screen. I get where they are coming from. However, with both fans and writers being unsatisfied with their book’s film versions, I believe that it’s about time that filmmakers allow the authors, at least, some creative control, even if it’s limited.

I once tried to sell my first book for movie adaptations to a site called “Greenlight My Movie.” I received no success, and I am glad about that now.

One, the story was not in a good enough place. It was the original version of the first book in my “Magical Missions” series, “The Frights of Fiji,” then titled, “From Frights to Flaws.” I realize that I was promoting it to filmmakers prematurely. And two, I would not have gotten to get any creative control. That would be difficult, especially since I am a huge control and have very specific envisions of my characters, settings, and much more.

I once considered animating my books into movies myself. However, that’s not realistic for one person, even in Adobe Animate. It would have been an overkill and probably inhuman.

So even if my book sales did drastically increase (which I hope they do), I would not sell any rights to anything where I wouldn’t get to have creative control. That would mean no foreign language or movie rights, or traditional publishing. I also feel that it might be better for my books not to be a super-famous. People would probably make fan-fiction and conspiracy theories that would displease me.

About the author:

Sunayna Prasad enjoys writing fantasy books for children, as well as cooking, creating artwork, watching online videos, and blogging. Eardrums blow, cardiac arrest, or the heat could literally cook your brain … well, you get the idea, anyway.

So, imagine, the surprise after being struck by lightning at 4, while playing my favorite video game - KANGA: SUPERHEROES AND VILLAINS that I woke up with only a small scar on my wrist.

Shortly after, I began displaying the same powers as my character in the game, such as Super Punch and Mega Bounce to name a few. Which, by the way, is the setting for most of her stories. She’s authored a handful of young adult and children's books and is continually writing, whether in her head or on the screen. Her characters are often sharp-witted and sarcastic and more often than not, find themselves in a bit of trouble.

Patricia is married to her best friend and has three grown children who think they know better than she. Who knows, maybe they do.

As a Christian, her stories each have a message of grace and hope as well as suspense and a tiny touch of romance. But both of their lives changed with a bang five months ago, and as far as Zach's concerned, it's his fault Jeremy will never see his twelfth birthday.

When Zach moves with his family to a Chicago suburb, he quickly becomes friends with a group of thrill-seeking kids trying to find a disappearing haunted house. But Zach's not worried. He doesn't believe in ghosts, so he follows them into a wild, dangerous encounter that becomes a battle to decide what's real and what's not.

Read an excerpt:

My bewildered gaze slithered from Dom to Josh, finally coming to a stop on Morgan as I tried to decide if they were crazy.

“If the house is invisible, how do you expect to find it?” I asked.

Morgan sat on the stoop next to me. “It’s not always invisible. My brothers saw it once. They said it’s a big house with a long porch. It vanished before they could set foot on the first step, and I’m glad, too.”

“Why? What would have happened if they were on the steps?” I asked. Not because I believed an old ghost story had any truth to it, but I was curious to know what she’d say.

Morgan had to pick her jaw up from the walkway before she could answer, and when she did her voice came out in a high-pitched squeak. “If they had been on the porch or worse—” she swallowed loudly “—inside, they would have disappeared with it.”

Buy on Amazon

(affiliate link included)

You find yourself on a deserted island. Colyer found her love for writing in first grade when her class was sent to the library and asked to find a book for their first book report. While she doesn’t still have this book report, she’s very proud to say she got an A on it. Her favorite thing about the book was that it had no words. That’s right, not one! That gave her the freedom to interpret the pictures in any way she wanted and write her own story.

This sparked her love for writing essays. It wasn’t until she was an adult that she sat down and penned her first novel. This story has a special place in her heart because it’s the story that helped her discover her passion for writing. She has since written several books, many of which may never see the light of day, but all of which helped her learn to combine her passion for writing with her fascination with all things mythical. You’ll find examples of this in her novels.

She lives in Illinois with her family.

Keep in Touch:

Website: https://cheriecolyer.com/children/

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Cherie-Colyer-author-250631921629169

Twitter: https://twitter.com/CherieColyer

Instagram: www.instagram.com/cherie_colyer/

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/21748654.C_L_Colyer

Amazon author page: https://www.amazon.com/C-L-Colyer/e/B09C6JPT3X/

Bookbub author page: https://www.bookbub.com/profile/cherie-colyer

Cherie Colyer will be awarding a $15 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.
