Chapter Books A to Z: G is for Green Meadow

I started this chapter books blog several weeks ago, just in time for the book blog tour featuring the Green Meadow series by Jennifer Walker. When I was compiling my list for this challenge, it was the first chapter book series that popped into my head for the letter "G." Books 1 and 2 plus a short companion story are currently available for purchase. Jennifer is hard at work on book #3. I won't speculate as to when it will actually be released. But I have it on good authority that she is being gently nudged to finish it soon!

The Green Meadow series is good for middle to upper elementary students. Leslie, the main character, is 13 years old. Her mother passed away some time ago, leaving her alone with her father. To pass the time, she works at the Green Meadow stables. She adores horses, though she can't afford her own. When she is given the opportunity to show one of the horses for its owner, she is quite successful, despite attempted sabotage by her nemesis Kate. Soon after the show, she finds her own horse. Though she names him Lucky, her father insists on calling him Bubba and the name sticks.

Bubba brings a lot of luck into Leslie's life. She gains new friends and a new mother. Relationships are put to the test later on, when a fire injures her beloved horse. Leslie starts to feel all different kinds of emotions about her life, which is quite typical at her age. As she tries to figure out herself and how to handle the new curve balls thrown to her by life, she learns some valuable lessons.

These books teach readers an amazing amount about horses. I know just a little, but felt a bit more educated after reading this series. I also appreciated positive role models and a healthier storyline than what is often found in current children's literature.

  1. Hello, Andrea! I'm the aunt who buys books for my nieces and nephews for Christmas and their birthdays, so I'm always on the lookout for exciting new books! Thanks for sharing info about this series. My 11-year-old niece loves animals and I think she'd really like this series!

Have a lovely weekend and happy A to Z!!
